Its official – in 2007 Jacques Chirac will not stand for President. He said so during a television interview this evening. And, indeed, the media is asking questions such as, Who will succeed Jacques Chirac as French President?.

The Telegraph on line makes this observation, The French presidential elections come after 12 years in which French political life has been dominated by the canny opportunism, ruthless determination and breathtaking survival skills of one man: Jacques René Chirac’ . What a challenge in terms of leadership succession – perhaps the French will find a solution works. Who knows?

Leadership succession seems to present a challenge at the US Federal Reserve where Mr. Greenspan has been succeeded by Mr. Bernanke. Writing on this transition, John Gapper of the Financial Times has this to say, Life is tough when your predecessor will not shut up. Gapper is referring to the fact that, Mr. Greenspan’s private ‘…prognostications about the global economy are regularly leaked and his gloom is treated more seriously this time than Mr. Bernanke’s upbeat view’.

Fortunately, at the Bank of England Mervyn KING the Governor seems to have been more fortunate than Ben Benanke – his predecessor, Eddie George seems to have determined how to truly pass on the baton.
